Caritas Athens jointly organizes with the Kindergarten and Elementary of “St. Joseph” Greek-French School a voluntary blood donation on Saturday, December 9 from 10.00 to 13.30, at the school’s premises (2, Ralli Street, Pefki), calling teachers, parents and friends to offer some of their spare time and blood.
In the meantime, the Section for Attracting Voluntary Blood Donors of the National Blood Donation Center (ΕΚΕΑ) visited the parish of Agios Loukas, within the framework of actions to raise awareness on voluntary blood donations, as well as to reach out to young blood donors and to motivate them.
According to EKEA, the key to develop a blood-donating culture is to attract volunteers while at school age, given that the age group from 10 to 14 years is considered best suited to grasp the meaning of voluntary blood donation.
Statistics indicate that, despite our country’s financial burden, voluntary blood donation is another aspect of social solidarity with increasing trends, given that Greece collects large amounts of blood compared to its population and ought to be sufficient. Nevertheless, occasional shortages are mostly due to lack of planning and central coordination. To this day, all blood donations are separately held to serve the needs of each hospital, a practice globally considered ineffective.
