A huge celebration of Sustainable Development titled “2030, Elpidos street” with the participation of Caritas Athens and Caritas Hellas was held on Sunday, April 22 on the pedestrianized Elpidos street at Victoria Square.
The event, a World Human Forum initiative jointly organized by ActionAid Hellas, Victoria Square Project and the Hellenic Platform for Development, involved bodies and organizations which had to explain to visitors the Sustainable Development’s 17 goals to meet by 2030 set by the United Nations.
Caritas introduced Goal No 2 “Zero Hunger.” A large team of employees and volunteers was telling passers-by at the stand about this Sustainable Development Goal, along with Caritas Athens and Caritas Hellas’ initiatives.
Several among them joined an interactive game Caritas Hellas came up with for the public. One of them was ActionAid Hellas’ former Chair, Ms. Alexandra Mitsotaki, who visited the stand and played, thrilled with the idea of it.
The event was attended amongst others by New Democracy’s President, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Mayor of Athens, Mr. Yiorgos Kaminis who both chatted with Caritas’ volunteers.
Mr. Mitsotakis stressed that these seventeen goals are a reminder that “7 billion people have to learn to co-exist peacefully on the planet. We only have one earth. Sustainable development is an issue of everybody’s concern.”
On his part, Mr. Kaminis was particularly interested in the actions of both Organizations, reminding the partnership between them and the Municipality.
