The summer excursion of the Third Age sector organized by Caritas Athens on Saturday, June 8, 2019 is dedicated to the “Thebes of Pindar and Osios Loukas & in Livadia of Lethe and Mnemosyne”.
The program includes an initial visit / tour to the new Archaeological Museum of Thebes, the home of the ancient lyric poet Pindar (522 BC – 443 BC). The 1,000 sq.m. museum is among the top three museums in the country, along with that of Acropolis and Delphi, as some of its collections are considered rare or unique in their kind. The many exhibits originate from excavations in Boeotia, covering chronologically the region’s culture from the Paleolithic to the Post-Byzantine periods.
Then we will head for a visit / tour to the Monastery of Osios Loukas the Steiriotis, the Agia Sophia of Roumeli, as they call it, which since its establishment identifies with the history of the Greek Nation and is a great Byzantine monument of the 11th century. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage, along with the New Monastery of Chios and the Monastery at Daphni.
On the way to Livadeia we will take a short stroll to Petra’s stunning waterfall for the necessary photos and we will end up in the capital of Boeotia, at the foot of Helicon, where in the antiquity there was the famous Oracle of Trophonius and the springs of Lethe and Mnemosyne. We will admire the famous and beautiful area of Krya with the abundant waters, the waterfalls and the stone bridges, the bust of Ekyna at the homonymous river (the work of the local artist Spyros Gourgiotis), one of the four … Catalan towers of Greece and Elgin’s clock (donated by the well-known British diplomat, who removed numerous sculptures from the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike and other archaeological sites and brought them to his country), built in London during 1803! We will have lunch at the “Neromylos” restaurant and before going back to Athens, we will have free time for walking, shopping of traditional products in the area (dairy, pasta etc.) or coffee.
