Caritas of Athens and Caritas Hellas co-ordinate their efforts to make a substantial contribution to the effort to relieve and strengthen our fellow citizens stricken by the fires.
From the very first moment representatives of Caritas visited the place of the tragedy declaring the presence and the intention to help at this extraordinary need. It is in contact with the local authorities of the Municipality of Rafina – Pikermi so that it can respond immediately.
According to information from the Municipality, the needs for medicines, clothing and water have been covered, while investigations for missing persons and recording of damages are ongoing.
In communication with the National Center for Voluntary Blood Donation (EKEA), it was known that the public’s response to the call for blood donation for fire victims surpassed all expectations. Hundreds of our fellow citizens across the country are flocking to hospital blood donation services to donate blood. The Attica daily collection more than doubled to 1300 units of blood.
Potential long treatment of burns will also require corresponding support with blood and derivatives, and as it is known, blood is maintained for only 35 days. Voluntary blood supply throughout August will help balance stocks and rationalize blood distribution according to needs.
Caritas Athens would like to express a great thank-you to all volunteer blood donors as well as the beneficiaries of the various programs of Caritas Athens and Caritas Hellas, encouraging them to become systematic blood donors, as only the existence of a sufficient number of conscious regular blood donors can ensure blood flow in both normal and extraordinary conditions.
