Caritas Athens organized a picnic at Veikou Park “presiding over the capital”, an action to observe Caritas Internationalis’ Global Week of Action (June 17-24), which takes place ahead of World Refugee Day (20/6) and within the framework of “Share the Journey” campaign, inaugurated by the Pope last September.
Families of refugees accommodated at the Organization’s shelters were among the picnickers, sharing with volunteers and employees, as well as park-goers, carefree and playful moments, attending laughter courses and activities for children and adults alike, while they enjoyed the beauty of nature, the company of new friends and plenty of food!
Laying their red and white checkered tablecloths participants will embark on new experiences, such as laughter courses given by Ms. Mary Eliade, founder of the Center “Iliahtida”, who volunteered and described laughter’s positive outcome on every person’s mental health and life in general!
Finally, to highlight the presence of all participants emphasizing the encounter’s significance, attendees wore the campaign’s t-shirts to take photos, posted on social media with the hashtag #Sharejourney.
Caritas Athens’ Board member, Ms. Helen Carabbott, Communication and Public Relations Officer and Refugee Sector’s Steering Committee member, Ms. Georgia Fonsou attended the event.
It is worth noting that the campaign runs for two years prompting organizations and Caritas communities across 165 countries to bring together refugees and local communities to increase opportunities for creating a culture of peaceful co-existence.
