EXCURSION FOR CARITAS ATHENS’ THIRD AGE SECTOR TO THE ISTHMUS OF CORINTH, ANCIENT CORINTH AND LOUTRAKI
A summer excursion that included the crossing of the Isthmus of Corinth, a conducted tour to Ancient Corinth’s archeological site (the Acrocorinth and the Archeological Museum), lunch at a local restaurant and coffee time at Loutraki was organized for the Third Age Sector by Caritas Athens on Saturday, June 9.
Sixty excursionists initially enjoyed a unique, hourly experience, crossing on boat “Argo” the magnificent Canal - an impressive 19th- century construction, as well as an international hub of maritime transport.
They subsequently visited Ancient Corinth’s archeological site and its particularly interesting Museum, considered one of Greece’s best, both in terms of richness and quality of its artifacts, and were guided by a local professional tour guide, Mr. Aimilios Panousopoulos, to the ruins of the temples of Aphrodite, Apollo and Octavia (sister of August who succeeded to the throne the Roman Caesar, settler of Corinth), the city’s Agora, the Odeon, the Theater and the Asklepeion, the renowned fountains of Peirene, Glauca and South Gallery, as well as the Bema of Saint Paul - as tradition has it - who visited the area.
The sightseeing was concluded visiting the Acrocorinth fortress - dating back to the 7th century BC – to enjoy a spectacular view of the Peloponnesian city’s modern landscape and its Gulf area, while they had lunch at the traditional restaurant “Tasos”.
We ended our excursion taking a stroll by the sea at Loutraki – the worldly tourist resort, also renowned for its thermal springs, its mineral waters and its casino – where we enjoyed our evening coffee before taking our way back!
