“MY ORIGINS ARE ROOTED IN MY CHILDHOOD” CARITAS ATHENS’ GUIDED VISIT TO THE NAMESAKE EXHIBITION AT THE LYCEUM CLUB OF GREEK WOMEN AHEAD OF MOTHER’S DAY

Caritas Athens offers an immersion to childhood memories ahead of Mother’s Day, organizing a guided visit to the exhibition titled “My origins are rooted in my childhood…” at Lyceum Club of Greek Women’s Museum of Greek Folklore Costume (7, Dimokritou street, Athens/Kolonaki), on Saturday, May 12th!

The exhibition -which draws its title on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s book “Flight to Arras” (1942) -calls the visitor to get to know children wear and toys of the historical Greek territory throughout the 19th and the first half of the 20th century: stories and objects relating to their everyday needs (food, sleep and bathing), porcelain dolls from Queen Olga’s collection, contemporary objects, such as Barbie dolls and Playmobils (dressed in Greek folklore costumes), as well as photos, witness accounts and video art installations (stop-motion claymation movies), offering a journey to the world of memory via a multisensory museum experience.

Almost always dominant in flashbacks to childhood, the image of the mother also takes the lead in the exhibition of the Museum, which celebrates its 30 years since launching, through apparel and accessories of woman-mother, related to agnation, fecundity, childbirth, breastfeeding, and puerperium.

Exhibits come from the rich costume collection of the Lyceum Club of Greek Women, as well as the collections of the “V. Papantoniou” Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation, the Ethnological and Folklore Museum of Chrisso – Elias E. Daradimos Collection – the E.L.I.A. – M.I.E.T. Photographic Archives, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, the Benaki Museum’s Photographic Archives, as well as from private collectors.

Participants will meet at 09.30 in front of Caritas Athens’ head offices at 9, Omirou street to go to the Museum at 7, Dimokritou street, Kolonaki.
